I have a bird-waterer outside, and sometimes sprinkle birdseed on the walk out the front window so the wild house finches and house sparrows can eat without squabbling over a feeder (and yes, to entertain my cats, Klaw and Smoke).
For weeks, a particular female finch came to my waterer. She sipped, then sat with her tail-feathers in the water. At first, I thought she'd found her own little water-park in which to endure our record heat. But her feathers were a little rough. I thought perhaps she fluffed them, or maybe she's sick or just old. She always stayed longer than I was willing to watch.
This morning I went out to blow the seed off the walk before visitors come after church. Just after starting, I saw a bird hunkered down, not flying away, so I turned off the blower and crouched near her. It was the little female from my waterer. Clearly she was not well if she wasn't flying.

You're probably here for fountain pen stuff, but what's in the article has to be said.
(And yes, visitors are still welcome in every Church meeting house)
One week ago, on Sunday, 28 September 2025, in Grand Blanc, Michigan, a man rammed his pickup truck into the front wall of a church building belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (hereinafter, "the Church"; members are sometimes referred to as "Mormons"1). On the other side of that wall, roughly 150 people (children, parents, grandparents) were in the middle of a worship service. The attacker proceeded to shoot at members of the congregation and then set the building on fire, using gasoline as an accelerant. He killed 4 people and injured 8 others before police stopped him. Thankfully, the man never had the chance to use the IEDs he brought with him. (You can read more in this Deseret News article, or just do a web search.)
These were my people.

One evening last month, I was sitting on the couch when I was suddenly struck by a terminological epiphany! I realized I've never been there. Never. It doesn't even matter where there is, I've never been there. It was a staggering realization. You see, whenever I've tried to go there, in the instant I arrive, it ceases to be there, and becomes here, thereby thwarting my efforts to get there.
As you can imagine, to someone who's been a lot of places, it's quite disconcerting to discover not only is there a place I've never been, but there's a place I can never get to. I confess, I'm sorely tempted to redouble my efforts rather than admit defeat. But logic dictates it doesn't matter how hard I try - I simply cannot get there. Success is impossible.

Rather than just removing them, I've decided to list here the quotes which have made their appearance at the bottom of my home page. That means this article will get new items added each time I change that quote. So, here they are:

This past Monday, I helped make history by participating in the Family Search Worldwide Indexing event (click the graphic for more info).
OK, sure, we're all making history every minute of every day, some of it memorable and some we hope will soon be forgotten, but with indexing, you make double the history at once: the usual history of your existence and making history accessible to others.
"Huh?" you ask.
